PES 2018 Review

Download PES 2018: Developing a series for an annual publication must be a delicate matter. In the space of a few months, you have to make everything more beautiful and produce meaningful gameplay strides (and even think of new buzzwords to put at the bottom of the box). With PES 2018, Konami’s annual football game looks a bit like last year’s edition – the presentation is flat, and its lack of licenses is a permanent problem – but excellent field settings are enough to make PES 2018 most satisfying football game ever made.

The most noticeable change is a net reduction in the speed of the game. This applies to both the movement of the ball and the player, which means that the matches have a more orderly pace for them. Players sprint and spin more slowly, so they’re much more realistic. However, everything feels just as responsive as before.

Combined with some new animations, the slower pace gives each shot a greater sensation of weight. It also means that when you lose the ball, it usually takes longer to recover, which can be frustrating – especially if the defense has not improved significantly in a few years. Individual tackles may seem clumsy, and opposition attackers get too much space from their markers when they receive the ball at the feet – Mourinho would not have it.

However, despite the change in speed of the PES, its mechanisms still allow you to perform spectacular maneuvers. The passes feel more satisfying than ever, getting up and curving and diving oh so beautifully. They are helped by a better positioning of the full men, allowing more opportunities to choose the players with crossed field balls – too often in PES 2017, I would like to try a million dollar pass to a winger who would inevitably be cut on the back. Now, rather than being a nice shortcut to losing possession, these Hollywood bullets are a legitimate tactic. The ground passes are currently performed with more variety, meanwhile: your players will change contextually from the ball’s spray with the outside of the boot to the curling with the inside to hit with the toe to tap to sting to put on.

The versatility of Passing allows you to produce beautiful football: play with Barcelona, and you can play like Barcelona – but it also means you can pick it up at the big-up or play it wide and get you through if a match or situation particular requires it. Changes to your attack intent level, for example, affect the depth of your team, set it to the limit, and your most prominent advocate acts as an attacker. This then allows you to play directly if you lose in the final stages of an important match.

This is particularly useful from the game pieces, which have been reworked to allow you to choose different tactics depending on the situation. You can now want to send your central defenders forward for long free kicks, for example, and hope for a knockdown. Or, from corner kicks, you can ask two players to be short or your whole team to line up on the edge of the box before making a late indent at the back post. Direct free kicks have also been improved, and now they feel more intuitive and fluid – and I can finally score points with them.

Players also protect the ball and stumble more realistically against opponents, not only to help you keep the ball but also to make them feel more like players, not just points on a screen. This makes it more disappointing, and Goalkeepers always act like robots: their static animations and inconsistent backups might be a bit better than last year, but they still break the illusion that you’re controlling a real team and serve to remind you that you are playing a video game.

However, this is a minor point of friction over licenses – or the lack of licenses. Among the major leagues in the world, only the French and Italian leagues hold a PES license, the Premier League, the EFL and the Spanish leagues being included just in an imaginary form. As usual with Pro Evo, the teams are replicated with fake kits and names of teams like Man Blue (Manchester City), London FC (Chelsea) and MD White (Real Madrid), while the German league is not is not present. Worse, the kits are often very different from the real versions they are supposed to imitate. The Ligue Champions are fired, but the magic of reaching it with your favorite team is spoilt if, rather than playing as Manchester United, you control Man Red – playing in black. Fortunately, it’s relatively easy, with the help of the community and a USB stick, to modulate authentic kits on PS4 and PC – and this can help alleviate the many complaints of PES as they appear when you insert the record for the first time. Xbox One users, however, are stuck with the likes of West Glamorgan City and Merseyside Blue for good.
